5-a-side hockey: Karnataka hold Jharkhand

Bengaluru, September 19: Action in the 3rd Hockey India 5-a-side Senior National Championship 2018 (Women) continued here today into its second day which saw Hockey Haryana, Hockey Odisha and Hockey Maharashtra register emphatic victories over their opponents while hosts Hockey Karnataka and Hockey Jharkhand played out a 3-3 draw in their respective Pool matches.

In Pool A’s first match of the day, Hockey Haryana defeated Hockey Punjab 5-1 to secure their second consecutive match of the competition and move to a tally of six points. Hockey Haryana were helped by two quick early goals in the 3rd minute by Manpreet Kaur and skipper Poonam Rani. A third goal in the 8th minute through Amandeep Kaur saw Hockey Haryana stamp their authority on the match, which was further cemented by Sarita (10′) and Sonika (14′) as they also scored for the eventual winners. Hockey Punjab’s only goal came in the 15th minute through Narinder Kaur.

The second Pool A match of the day saw Hockey Odisha secure an emphatic victory over Hockey Unit of Tamil Nadu as they won 9-1. Five goals in the first period and four in the second saw Hockey Odisha register their second consecutive victory in the competition. Goals for Hockey Odisha were scored by Mariana Kujur (2′, 10′, 17′), Elima Minz (6′, 11′), Priyanka Ekka (7′, 20′), Manju Lakra (9′) and Asmita Barla (15′) while E Ponmathi (16′) scored Hockey Unit of Tamil Nadu’s only goal.

In Pool B, Hockey Maharashtra defeated Uttar Pradesh Hockey 6-2 as Ramngaihzuali Ralte (1′, 3′, 20′) and Preeti Dubey (9′, 14′, 18′) scored hat-tricks. Uttar Pradesh Hockey’s two goals were scored by skipper Shyama Tidgam (10′, 12′).

Pool B’s second match of the day saw hosts Hockey Karnataka and Hockey Jharkhand play out an exciting 3-3 draw. It was Hockey Jharkhand who twice took the lead in the match through goals from Birajini Ekka (1′) and Sima Kumari (10′), but Hockey Karnataka’s fight saw them take a 3-2 lead with the help of goals scored by SP Kruthika (3′, 11′) and PA Pavithra (14′). However, Hockey Jharkhand secured their second 3-3 draw in a row as they scored a third goal in the 19th minute through Birajini Ekka.
