Mysuru, December 1: Karnataka youngster Devdutt Padikkal made his Ranji Trophy debut memorable with a match-winning 77 in his side’s comprehensive seven-wicket win against Maharashtra in the Elite Group A clash here on Saturday.
Needing 130 runs on the fourth day, Karnataka overhauled the meagre target in 70.2 overs to top the table with 12 points from three games. Middle-order batsman Kaunian Abbas remained unbeaten on 34.
Karnataka vice-captain Shreyas Gopal was adjudged man of the match.
Earlier in the day, Karnataka were on cruise mode with Devdutt (77, 128b, 11×4, 1×6) and D. Nischal (61, 212b, 4×4) building a solid foundation with a 121-run stand for the opening wicket before the former departed. Last game centurion KV Siddharth (4) didn’t last long either.
With 14 runs required, Nischal too departed. A well-settled Abbas and Pawan guided their team home to register their first victory of the season.
Karnataka will next take on Saurashtra at Rajkot on December 6th– 9th.
