Surat, December 14: A collective effort from Karnataka bowlers helped their side bowl out Gujarat for a decent 216 on the first day of the Elite Group A Ranji Trophy tie here on Friday.
In reply, Karnataka were 45/2 at close of play with the experienced Piyush Chawla and Arzan Nagwaswalla taking a wicket each. Opener Mayank Agarwal returned to the fray but just made 25 off 36 balls.
Earlier in the day, Gujarat elected to bat first on what appeared to be a batting friendly surface. Having made the decision, only the skipper Priyank Panchal showed some resilience to top-score with a 135-ball 74 (8×4). But from the other end, none of his team-mates fired.
From the tail Chawla (34, 45b, 5×4) and Mehul Patel (31, 44b, 3×5, 1×6) chipped in with some useful scores.
Going into the second day, Karnataka are trailing by another 171 runs in the first innings.
