Ranji Trophy: Karnataka thump Mumbai by 5 wickets

Karnataka's Devdutt Padikkal will look to continue his form against Madhya Pradesh.

Karnataka began their New Year on a fruitful note with a comfortable five-wicket win against Mumbai in their Ranji Trophy Elite group clash at the Bandra-Kurla Complex, here on Sunday.

Chasing a meagre target of 126 on the third day, Karnataka cruised home aegis Devdutt Padikkal’s quick 46-ball 50 (5×4, 2×6) to take six points.

As Karnataka raced off 77/0 post-lunch, the visitors suffered a jolt losing four quick wickets – two to spinner Shashank Attarde (4-52) – Padikkal leg-before and then dismissing Abhishek Reddy (4).

But Shreyas Gopal (5 not out) and BR Sharath (4 not out) steered them home without any further damage.

It was Karnataka’s 200th outright victory in the history of Ranji Trophy after Mumbai.

Meanwhile, the day’s proceedings were interrupted twice by an unexpected intruder – snakes. The reptiles invaded the field on a regular basis during play and later were caught by the snake-catcher.

Brief scores: Mumbai (I innings): 194 & II innings: 149/9 (Sarfaraz Khan 71 not out, Shams Mulani 31; Prateek Jain 4-11) lost to Karnataka I innings 218 and II innings: 129/5 (Devdutt Padikkal 50, R Samarth 34; Shashank Attarde 4-52) by 5 wickets.
