Nagpur, November 13: D. Nischal and Sharath BR came up with a fighting innings as Karnataka finished the second day at 208/5 against champions Vidarbha in the Ranji Trophy clash, here on Tuesday.
The visitors lost wickets at regular intervals as right-handed opener Nischal (66 batting, 209b, 4×4) and debutant Sharath BR (46 batting) steadied the ship adding 59 runs for the sixth wicket. For the hosts, pacer Aditya Sarwate and off-spinner Akshay Wakhare shared two wickets each.
With three days remaining, Karnataka still trail by 99 runs.
In pursuit of a challenging total, Karnataka were off to a disastrous start losing R. Samarth (1) in the second over while another debutant KV Siddharth (19) too departed early to make it 30/2.
Sarwate had Karun Nair (15) plumb and later, an experienced Stuart Binny (20) was sent back by spinner Wakhare. At this stage, Karnataka were struggling at 87/4.
Shreyas Gopal (30) joined Nischal to revive the scoring with a confident 62-run stand for the fifth-wicket before pacer Darshan Nalkande had the former caught.
With youngsters Nischal and Sharath in the middle, Karnataka just need another 99 runs.
Earlier in the day, Vidarbha added 62 runs to their overnight 245/8 to be bowled out for 307. Shrikanth Wagh (57) completed his half century while tailender Wakhare contributed 35 not out.
Left-arm spinner J. Suchith (4/33) grabbed another wicket while skipper R. Vinay Kumar (2/51) and Abhimanyu Mithun (3/53) were the other wreckers for Karnataka.
