Bengaluru, January 16: A late fight back from R. Vinay Kumar and Ronit More gave Karnataka a slender 39-run lead against Rajasthan in the first innings on the Day 2 of the Ranji Trophy quarterfinals, here on Wednesday.
At the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Karnataka were struggling at 166/9 before Vinay (83, 144b, 10×4, 2×6) and More (10) shouldered the responsibility to add a crucial 97 runs for the ninth wicket to give Karnataka first innings points. Leg-spinner Rahul Chahar (5/93) led the charge with a brilliant spell but all went in vain.
A valiant effort from the Karnataka duo steered the game in their favour but Rajasthan will be ruing after letting the game slip out of their hands.
In reply, Rajasthan were 11/0 in the second innings at close of play. The visitors trail by 28 runs behind with three days to go.
Earlier, Karnataka beginning on overnight 12/0, were off to a disastrous start losing Nischal in the third over of the day.
In-form KV Siddharth (52, 91b, 8×4) collaborated with opener R. Samarth (32) to add 44 runs for the second wicket. Samarth’s departure triggered a mini collapse with the dismissal of Karun Nair (4) and skipper Manish Pandey (7) to make it 90/4.
Rajasthan bowlers continued to pile up pressure from both the ends. Even the experienced Karnataka batting line up succumbed before the tail enders saved the day.
