Rajkot, December 6: This is his last game of his illustrious first-class career and Saurashtra skipper Jaydev Shah was eager finish on a high. On the opening day of the Elite Group A match against Karnataka, 35-year-old Jaydev came up with a composed 159-ball 97 (9×4, 3×6) that helped his side post 288/9 at close of play at the SCA ground on Thursday.
The wrecker-in-chief Suchith Jagadeesha bagged a five-wicket haul while Pawan Deshpande took three on the first day.
Having elected to bat on their home turf, Saurashtra were on the backfoot losing Harvik Desai (26) for a doubtful caught behind decision from South African umpire Brad White. Snell Patel (22) too didn’t last long to make it 34/2.
Left-arm spinner Suchith grabbed his third wicket as Saurashtra slipped to 73/3. Introducing part-time off-spinner Pawan Deshpande was another good move from Karnataka skipper R. Vinay Kumar. Saurashtra were reduced to 79/4 with Harvik Desai walking back to the hut to a dubious decision from umpire White.
Then, seasoned batsman Jaydev shouldered the responsibility scoring a sublime innings to help his team to post a respectable total on the board.
Brief scores: Saurashtra (I innings): 288/9 in 91 overs (Harvik Desai 26, Arpit Vasavada 38, Jaydev Shah 97, Prerak Mankad 37, Kamlesh Makvana 31, J. Suchith 5/104, Pawan Deshpande 3/78) vs Karnataka.
